Doug Daniels Sr. is proud of the fact that his family's business is one of only three remaining large tire dealers in the Greater Los Angeles area that have been doing business since the 1950s when the federal government created the U.S. interstate highway system.
The federal highway system transformed Los Angeles and helped create the world's seventh largest economy. It also changed the 12 communities in which Daniels Tire Service's retail and commercial locations serve.
What hasn't changed is the quality of service that Daniels Tire Service has maintained over the years since R.F. Daniels started the company 99 years ago in Whittier, Calif., said Doug Daniels Sr., the company's president and CEO.
It's this quality of service that has earned the Santa Fe Springs, Calif.-based tire dealer designation as The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's Commercial Tire Dealer of the Month for September 2010. Daniels Tire Service has five commercial tire locations in the Greater Los Angeles Area, San Diego, Riverside, Bakerfield and Oxnard/Ventura. Daniels Tire has a total of 13 locations, including a retreading plant in Santa Fe Springs. The retreading plant produces tires using Goodyear's Precure and patented UniCircle® retreading processes.
Each month, Goodyear honors its top dealers that provide customers outstanding service, while helping them choose from among the Goodyear, Dunlop and Kelly tire brands. The Dealer of the Month honor recognizes Daniels Tire Service for helping customers make full use of Goodyear services, such as fleetHQ, TVTRACK and GTRACS automated retread tracking system.
"We really appreciate being chosen as the commercial tire dealer of the month," Doug said. "This is a reflection of our employees and of our commitment to offering customers full value from the products and services they purchase from us. We work closely with the folks in Akron (Goodyear's corporate headquarters) and we're pleased that they've recognized our hard work.
"Over the course of our company's history, our business has been built on the reputation we'e earned," Doug said. "Our employees are highly skilled tire professionals who enjoy the work they do. We're able to develop total tire maintenance programs for our customers that allows us to become a resource for them to help control their tire maintenance costs.
"Another big reason we've been in business for so long, particularly in the last 70 years, is the quality and innovation that Goodyear has brought to the products we've been able to offer our customers," Doug said.
Outstanding customer support through services such as fleetHQ has also contributed to the success of Daniels Tire, he added. fleetHQ is Goodyear's comprehensive business solution that offers fleets, regardless of size, uniform tire pricing at home or on the road, centralized invoicing and 24-hour emergency roadside service.
"With the help of the 24-hour fleetHQ Solution Center, we've been able to improve our response rate to the point that we're close to responding to every call within a two-hour window," Doug said. "That's quite an accomplishment when it can take 45 minutes or longer to drive 15 miles in L.A. traffic.
"We're proud to say that even though we've seen a lot of competition come and go in the Southern California market, it's our reputation that has allowed us to earn and keep many long-term customers," he said. "Our growth at Daniels Tire Service is due to referrals from our satisfied customers and consistent longevity of our employees."
Originally known as Whittier Vulcanizing, Daniels Tire Service was founded in 1911. The one-man operation gradually grew, and in 1929, the second generation, Arden G. Daniels, assumed control of the company. In 1939, Arden established a business relationship with The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. The third generation of Daniels, Doug Sr. and Barry Daniels, assumed control of the business in 1968. The business is still family-owned, with the fourth generation, Doug Jr. and John Daniels, entering the business in 1986.
"Each generation of Daniels started in the business at the ground level," Doug Sr. said. "We've all swept floors and changed, loaded and delivered tires. Our involvement in the family tire business didn't come from expectation, but from a genuine interest to be part of the business legacy."
Next year, the Daniels family will be celebrating a century of selling tires in Southland.
