“Urra” may be just the right word in Gaelic to describe Flynn’s Commercial Tire. But since few people outside of Ireland speak the old Irish language, few may know that the word means “dependable” or that it’s pronounced “your ray.”
“When my grandfather, John J. Flynn, and his sons, Joe and R.P. Flynn, (current chairman of the board), started our family’s business in 1964, they went through several different names, trying to come up with the right one,” said Joe Flynn III, president and grandson of co-founder John J. Flynn. “Unfortunately, every name they came up with had already been incorporated. And back then it took weeks to hear back from the government about new submissions.
“Finally, my grandfather took out his Gaelic dictionary in frustration, looked up the translation for ‘dependable’ and found the word ‘urra,’” Joe said. “So, for years our family’s company was called Urra Co. Inc. But the word proved too difficult for local people to pronounce, so we use Flynn’s Tire as our ‘dba’ (doing business as).”
Still, “dependable” continues to be the operative word in describing the service that customers can expect at Flynn’s Tire, Joe said. “Our company has a motto we like to call ‘The Flynn Philosophy,’” he added. “Our ‘Flynn-osophy’ says that you hire good people and offer better service than anyone else and create the best experience for each customer.”
And a key part of “Flynn-osophy” is being dependable, he added.
Dependability is just one of many reasons The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has chosen Mercer, Pa.-based Flynn’s Commercial Tire as its March commercial tire dealer of the month. Each month, Goodyear honors its top dealers that provide customers outstanding service, while helping them choose from among the Goodyear, Dunlop and Kelly tire brands. The dealer of the month honor recognizes Flynn’s for helping customers make full use of Goodyear services, such as fleetHQ and the company’s training resources for dealers.
Flynn’s Commercial Tire includes three commercial tire locations, in Hubbard, Ohio; Dover, Ohio; and Buffalo, N.Y., and a retread plant in Dover, Ohio. It is one of three divisions that Flynn’s Tire operates. The company also has a retail division – Flynn’s Tire and Auto Service – with 18 locations (many of which also sell commercial tires) and a wholesale division – Flynn’s Wholesale Tire – with four wholesale distribution centers.
“Being chosen as one of Goodyear’s best commercial tire dealers is an honor that makes us proud,” Joe said.
Joe attributes the recognition from Goodyear and his dealer’s success to God for blessing them with good people and giving them the resources to train those good people.
“We hold an orientation every month for all new employees and I personally spend time getting to know everyone who comes into the company,” Joe said. “Since our employees represent our company and our family, and since I consider our employees to be an extension of our family, I want to be sure to get know our new employees. It’s my last name of the building and on the trucks, so I want to make sure that each of them knows how important it is to me to represent it with integrity.”
Joe said the training resources that Goodyear offers enhance the work that his employees do because it helps them stay knowledgeable about tires and tire services. “Our employees participate in online classes available through the Goodyear Tire Academy, plus we have a company in-house trainer who helps coordinate the training sessions for all of our employees,” he added.
“After our employees get to know our customers and their needs, the training they receive helps them make recommendations,” he said. We now include several solution concepts in our presentations to fleets and have been able to calculate potential savings for them, which have resulted in new business. Our approach is to help solve problems rather than sell tires.”
One of the problems Flynn’s Tires excels at addressing is helping customers get more miles to removal from their original tire casings. It’s done through retreading. Flynn’s Tire retread plant produces tires using four curing chambers and the Goodyear UniCircle retread process.
Joe also believes that service support, particularly through fleetHQ, Goodyear’s portfolio of business solutions for commercial fleets that includes an emergency roadside assistance program, is another key to help solve his customers’ problems, which contributes to his company’s success.
“We were the first dealer on fleetHQ and we have more than 1,000 preferred customers,” Joe said. “Having fleetHQ service notifications sent to my cell phone has helped us improve our response rate dramatically.
“Not only do I get a text message on service call ‘declines,’ but the general manager of our commercial division, Ed Bodnar, and the location manager do too,” he added. “We've had several three-way conversations late into the evening trying to get a customer up and running. We have a toll-free number for our customers, and fleetHQ extends that support by allowing us to roll after-hour calls into the fleetHQ call center.”
